William Clyde "Bill" Elliott popularly known as Bill Elliott born on October 8th, 1955 in Dawsonville, Georgia, is a famous part-time driver in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup series. Elliott has, in his career, garnered 44 wins in Winston Cup series, including two Daytona 500 victories, and a record four consecutive wins at Michigan International Speedway during 1985-86.
Bill Elliott first took to the wheels in 1976 making his first Winston Cup start at Rockingham and qualifying 34th in a field of 36 cars. Five years later in 1985, thirty-five-year-old Bill earned 11 wins and 11 poles and also won the first Winston Million in the Southern 500 at Darlington and thus earned the nickname "Million Dollar Bill," and "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville."
Two years later in 1987, "Awesome Bill” became the fastest man to ever turn the wheel of a stock car after turning a lap at Talladega of 212.809 mph and yet he lost the Winston Cup Championship that year. However undaunted Bill won the 1988 NASCAR Winston Cup championship.
Bill Elliott tried hard to qualify for the 2007 Daytona 500 but failed to make it in the #37. He signed up to drive the #21 for Wood Brothers Racing at least in two events for 2007. His championship provisional will sure guarantee him starting the race.
The winner of the NASCAR's "Most Popular Driver Award" for a record sixteen times, Bill Elliott has achieved another distinction in his career. He is going to be inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America on August 15th, 2007. According to an announcement made on 20th February 2007, the ceremony will take place in Detroit.
